“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” I can’t tell you how many times my mother uttered those words growing up, and most of the time she was right. We often get some skeptics who check out Booktango and ask the questions: “If it’s free, 100% royalties, and non-exclusive rights, what’s the catch? How do you make money?”
These are legitimate questions from a consumer who is shopping around for a DIY publishing platform. But, there is no catch! December is often a time of reflection for me and for most people. I spend time thinking about the accomplishments I’ve made over the last year, the opportunities to do better and to set my goals for the coming year.
Coincidentally, this year in addition to reflecting on my personal life and career, I also get to take a look back at Booktango. Booktango officially went live to the world in Beta one year ago. It’s been an exciting year and as we close out 2012 and celebrate our first anniversary, I wanted to take some time to celebrate the last 12 months and look ahead to 2013.
At launch, Booktango had some of the core features you see today such as the online editor, error identification, e-book details collection, retailer selection and submission. We knew we weren’t done, but we were excited to get an initial product out and begin gathering feedback from our authors. Creator of the website Crimson and Cream Machine, Matt Hofeld is a true University of Oklahoma fan. And his book, 2012 Sooner Kickoff, is uniting fellow fans around the world. We asked Hofeld about the story behind his book and learned about the Sooners’ passionate fan base.
How long have you been a Sooner football fan?
My whole life. Growing up in Oklahoma you are either a Sooner or a Cowboy, and my family was OU all the way. The games were on at my house every Saturday; it was a family tradition to gather around and watch. I attended my first game in person in 1984, and as a 10-year-old, I became hooked for life.
When did your website, Cream and Crimson Machine, launch?
We launched Crimson and Cream Machine in August of 2006. The idea was to create a website for Sooner fans, by Sooner fans. In addition to the information that we post on a daily basis, there is opportunity for fans to create their own posts, display photos and link to articles that they find interesting. Design with the reduced visibility of your cover in mind
Sometimes as authors we can get so close to crafting our book that we forget we’re not the audience for our book. For example, we might design our book cover based on the colors and visual elements we like instead of thinking about what our audience might like. In a former life as an ad executive for JWT, I found we often needed to remind our clients, “It’s not about you; it’s about your customers.” In your case, as an author, sometimes you need to remember, “It’s not about you; it’s about the people who will read your book and tell their friends about it.”

Any author knows that a fine piece of art — such as your e-book — occasionally needs some tweaking. Even when you have proofread, edited and put that final shine on your book, you may have some ideas later that would make it even better.
Perhaps you find a few lingering typos that you need to correct; or maybe you decide your cover should “pop” more, and you want to spruce up the image, colors or text fonts.
The gadget marketplace is rapidly growing for e-book consumers. The tablet marketplace launched about two years ago with the introduction of the Apple iPad in spring 2010. Then e-readers were first introduced in late 2007, less than five years ago, with the launch of the Amazon Kindle. Today, people who read e-books are faced with multiple e-reader options. So, where does the marketplace stand? And what exactly does it mean for you as an author?
Dedicated e-readers, such as the Barnes and Noble NOOK, Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, allow consumers to download and read e-books only. Tablets, such as the Barnes and Noble NOOK Tablet, Amazon Kindle Fire, Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy, serve as multifunctional devices that can access the Internet, email, social media and more.
Is it a surprise that tablets, with their added bells and whistles, are coming out on top in the popularity contest against dedicated e-readers?
